From analog to IP cameras, solar-powered setups for areas with unreliable grid supply, to remote monitoring on your phone — here is what actually matters when securing a home, office, or industrial site in Nigeria.

Why CCTV Is No Longer Optional

Whether it is a residential compound in Minna, a retail store in Abuja, or an industrial site with equipment worth protecting, video surveillance has moved from "nice to have" to a baseline expectation. Beyond deterring theft, a properly installed CCTV system gives you visibility into deliveries, staff movement, gate activity, and perimeter breaches — day or night, whether you are on-site or on the other side of the country.

The problem most people run into is not whether to install cameras, but how to choose a setup that actually holds up: one that survives Nigeria's power situation, doesn't need constant technician visits, and gives footage clear enough to actually identify a face or a plate number when it matters.

1. Analog vs IP Cameras: What Actually Matters

Most quotes you will get fall into two camps:

  • Analog (CVI/TVI/AHD) systems: Cheaper upfront, simpler cabling (coaxial), and still perfectly capable for basic coverage — entrances, gates, small compounds. Resolution has improved a lot in recent years (up to 5MP on modern analog), but you are limited in how far you can push smart features like remote motion alerts or AI-based detection.
  • IP (network) cameras: Higher resolution ceiling, better low-light performance, and — critically — native support for remote viewing, cloud/NVR recording, and smart analytics (line-crossing alerts, vehicle detection, facial recognition on higher-end models). They cost more per camera and need a properly configured network, but for anything beyond a small home setup, this is where Yunivolt steers most clients.

For a small residence with 2-4 cameras, analog is often perfectly adequate and keeps cost down. For businesses, warehouses, or compounds where you want to check footage from your phone while traveling, IP is worth the extra investment.

2. The Power Problem — and Why Solar-Backed CCTV Matters

This is the part most installers in Nigeria gloss over. A camera that goes dark every time PHCN cuts power is a camera that is not doing its job — and break-ins disproportionately happen during outages, precisely because compounds go dark and alarm systems drop offline.

A properly engineered CCTV installation should never depend solely on grid power. At minimum, your NVR/DVR and PoE switch should sit behind a UPS rated for several hours of runtime. For sites with frequent or extended outages, we design small dedicated solar-battery backup circuits specifically for the security system — separate from the main household or office solar setup — so surveillance keeps running even during multi-day outages. This is a small addition on top of an existing solar installation, but it is the difference between a system that works on paper and one that actually protects you when it matters.

3. Camera Placement — The Part That Gets Rushed

Poor placement is the single biggest reason CCTV footage fails to actually help after an incident. Common mistakes we see and correct:

  • Cameras aimed into direct sunlight or facing west — causing washed-out footage every afternoon. Orientation matters as much as resolution.
  • Entry points left uncovered — side gates, boys' quarters entrances, and rooftop access are frequently skipped in favor of just the main gate.
  • Cameras mounted too high with a downward angle — great for wide coverage, useless for identifying a face. At least one camera at each entry point should be angled to capture faces at a usable resolution, not just movement.
  • No overlap between camera zones — leaving blind spots exactly where someone moving along a wall or fence line would pass.

A proper site survey (which we always do before quoting) maps out sightlines, existing lighting, and blind spots before a single camera is mounted — not after.

4. Storage and Remote Access

Two decisions shape how useful your system is after an incident:

  • Local NVR/DVR storage — the standard approach. Footage stays on-site on a hard drive, typically retaining 2-4 weeks depending on camera count and resolution. No recurring subscription cost.
  • Cloud backup (optional, recommended for businesses) — a secondary copy of key footage stored off-site, so a stolen or damaged NVR does not mean losing your evidence along with it.

Either way, remote viewing via a mobile app should be standard on any IP-based install — checking on your gate, your shop, or your generator house from your phone, whether you are upstairs or out of the country.

5. What a Proper Installation Actually Includes

A rushed CCTV job usually means cameras mounted with visible, unprotected cabling, no surge protection on the power lines, and a DVR shoved in a corner with no ventilation. At Yunivolt, every installation includes:
